Ohio Delphi plant firing raises talk of wildcat strike
May 6, 2006

The shop chairman at a Delphi Corp. brake plant in Dayton, Ohio, was fired Friday evening and the union local's president was escorted from the plant in a police cruiser, leaving 1,500 hourly workers to talk about a wildcat strike.

As the supplier, restructuring under Chapter 11, plans to sell or shut down 25 of 33 U.S. plants by January 2008, anger among workers is growing.

Employees say the uproar started when an employee left his assembly line for an unauthorized bathroom break and was disciplined by Delphi. Shop chairman Tony Keen threatened to shut down some of Delphi's machines, using his power to do so if he believes safety is in danger, said Dan Lamb, an hourly worker at the plant.

Local president Joe Buckley discouraged workers from a wildcat strike, a walkout not authorized by union executives.

Delphi management called Dayton police to escort Buckley off the premises.
